OICC 7 for 205 (B Eriksson 40 Retired, B Frawley 40 Retired, D Mayes 31, A Schwager 28 E Bassingthwaite 25, P Frost & A Boorer 10 & 10 not out (very important runs in final result), M Forde 4, T Grimes 3) DEFEATED
NWS Hurricanes 9 for 204 (D Mayes 4/36, C Maconnachie, J McCarthy, A Boorer, P Frost & B Frawley 1 wicket each).
Welcome to Craig Maconnachie (C Mac) and (Judge) Yas Shariff as new members to the OICC.
As a true substitute for Kris Mason as Captain, I have to say that my 40 retired, my captaincy decisions and my 1 wicket were the ‘Difference’.
A great, enjoyable game at Ryde International on an intermittent wet day on Sunday saw us come out victorious on the 2nd last ball of the day.
There really couldn’t have been a closer game: NWSH were 2/38 from 10; 3/89 from 20; 6/140 from 30 finishing with 204. OICC were cruising at 0/50 from 10; 2/88 from 20; 4/139 from 30, finishing with 205.
The game started well with Dorny 2/26 off his 1st 5 over spell & the miserly C Mac 0/11 off 5. Just the start we needed. The next 10 went for 50 with only 1 wicket ( a brilliant catch by Dorny off Justin McCarthy – J Mac) and we were under a bit of pressure, which meant Frosty was keeping warm for much of this period before he came on to stem the tide of runs, but a few too many loose balls from yours truly enabled NWSH to keep scoring freely at 5 an over, and continued this through overs 30 – 40 at 6.5 an over.
Dorny and C Mac were reintroduced to the attack to bowl out the overs, bar over 40, with 3 wickets in 6 of the last 7 seven overs for only 23 runs.
A good bowling performance from all bowlers, but just maybe 1 or 2 too many loose balls per over.
Our turn to bat and I was pretty confident we could chase down 205, but on an increasingly difficult wet pitch and slower outfield we made hard work of it. In our favour of course was a wet ball for NWSH.
An excellent start by Schwags Dutton (28) & the Eel Eriksson (40*) got us off to perfect start, with Eel retiring, and then Dorny (31) continuing where the Eel left off. Our 1st wicket, Schwags, fell at 70 and then unfortunately newcomer Judge Yas was fired LBW (2 for 71). Dorny & Frawley then put on 55 in 10 overs to keep us in the hunt before Dorny fell hooking down legside, and Frawley decided it was time to go slow (20 off his 1st 6 scoring shots then 17 more scoring shots for his 2nd 20), putting his side under a bit of pressure. C Mac fell to the same bowler, same shot – 4 for 132 needing 73 off 11. Then Lord Bassingthwaite played a great innings of 25 with some power hitting as well as firing up with the opposing captain around the scoreboard not being updated. As the game was very tight, Dave (NWSH captain) got a bit irate when we missed updating the scoreboard for 1 over. At the end of 31 overs we were 4/143, we didn’t update to 4/149 at the end of 32, but at the end of 33, Bass collected 11 and there were 5 wides, so the scoreboard was updated and now 4/165. That was the over we needed and their captain spat the dummy. Well, it doesn’t take much for Bass to fire back. Bass fell 10 runs later, bringing Frosty to the crease and Frawley retired 1 ball later.
The equation was now 5 overs remaining, tailenders, who can all bat, remaining, with 2 in the shed, 5 wickets down, requiring 29 (a run a ball with 5 wickets in hand – should be easy right?). Frosty put on a very important 10 and was bizarrely run out, Wild Thing Grimes went LBW for 3, and Forde put on an important 4 not out with some good running between the wickets. The next 4 overs we put on 19, requiring 10 off the last against their off-spinner Rupani, who bowled quite well.
2 to Boorer; 1 to Boorer; 1 to Forde; 4 to Boorer; 2 to Boorer (great captaincy decision to bat Boorer at 11). So there it was, we made 29 off 29 to win the game.
All that was needed now was to enjoy a winners’ beer!!
Well done lads.
