Saturday’s game was a head to head against West Epping, our main rivals for 4th spot. Win and we definitely make the finals.
Winning the toss, we elected to bat and found ourselves in a bit of bother at 2-17 after 6 overs. But, not for the first time, Sharpy and Riordo rescued us with a fine 70 odd partnership – Sharpy out for 49 and Riordo for a second 50 in two games, during which he brought up his 4000th run for the Club (really well done Riordo!!). Phil took over and bludgeoned a fine 50 (with 5 sixes) and we were sitting pretty at 4-188 with 6 overs to go. However, we imploded and with a typical Taronga collapse, we lost 5 wickets for 7 runs in 5 overs. It took Raj (9no) and Karl (5no) at the death to see us past 200. But our final score of 9-208 was at least 20 short of where we should have been.
Still, we thought that if we bowl well, we should beat a team we hadn’t lost to this season. And we started off very well, with 2 run outs – one from Karl and one a fine throw from the boundary from Ravel - and a wicket for Shero (1-31) saw West Epping in trouble at 3-36

. But then their young skipper Ben played very well and hit a fine 99 and, although wickets fell at the other end, he was always in control. We did take a few good catches but were generally run ragged in the field with the young lads taking plenty of 2’s when there should have only been one. It was a close game but West Epping past our score with a couple of balls to spare.
With 20 more runs and 20 less years on the legs, I think we’d have won, but that’s been the story of our season really. We’ve let a few games go that we should have won.
Technically, we are still in with a chance of making the finals. We need to win next week ……. And other results need to go our way
