An excellent start to the season for Taronga with a win against West Epping – stars of the show, the Wanzare ‘brothers’ and Sharpy.
West Epping won the toss and batted on a lovely afternoon at George Kendall. Jess (1-17), opened the bowling (nice to have a someone genuinely quick in the team), and got us off to a good start removing one of the openers early with a fast yorker. West Epping moved to 82 and were in a good position before the strangle came from AB (1-25) and Shero (3-29) and some electric fielding from Raj. Raj then took the ball and bowled very well for his 3-16, and he and Phil (2-10) mopped up the tail. West Epping were all out for 137.
Confidence was high at the break – morale boosted by the arrival of spectator and one-time Iggies opener, Jeremy Tyson. In the first over however, Big Show was run out without facing. Opinion was divided on the run. Some questioned whether a single was ever really on, and others, well Sharpy, said there was an easy one, Big Show should have been backing up….. Either way we were 1 down for 0 runs. Undeterred, Sharpy and Jess knuckled down and against some tight bowling took us to 30odd before Jess was caught at mid-on. In came Yogesh, who immediately picked up where he’d left off last season and hit a sublime 69no (off 63 balls) with 6 sixes and 6 fours – a massive six over cover the highlight of the innings. Sharpy at the other end was steadier and ended up not out, one short of a well deserved 50.
