Taronga New Season 2024 / 2025 - Week 1 v Chatswood Gypsies at Blackman Upper

An excellent start to the season on Saturday.  Obviously good to get off to a winning start but any victory over Chatswood Gypsies is something we really do enjoy - even if it wasn't our old friends Waller and Co, though the captain of Gypsies fitted the same mould.

The toss was won by AB (and an easy choice to bat first) but a less easy decision was who to leave out from the squad of 12.  In the end Rav was left on the bench, apparently not having done quite enough in the last game he played for the team.......

Cagey & Sharpy started well against some tight bowling, before Cagey was bowled for 10, quickly followed by Dhruv to leave us 41 for 2 after 11 overs.  Sharpy was batting well and pretty soon so was Yogesh, hitting the shot-of-the-day six straight down the ground. But then Sharpy fell to innocuous ball trying a Gelo-style paddle around the corner and was caught at backward square for 48. Riordo joined Yogesh and the pair picked up from where they left off last season before surprisingly, Yogesh charged at a slow ball, missed and was stumped - falling short of a well deserved half-century for 49.  After 26 overs, we were 4 down for 126.  On a slow pitch and slow outfield (despite the synthetic), we had earlier said 160 or 170 would be a decent score.  However, thanks to Riordo, hitting 8 fours and one six in his 66no, and supported by AB (17 no) we reached 200-4 after 35 overs.

We started well, with Rav (on as 12th man) taking a sharp catch off Romo. Gypsies were going well (48-1) despite good bowling from Romo and increasingly, after a slightly wayward start, from Dhruv.  But then Romo, who had been unlucky with dropped catches (the new Stu?) and a clear LBW shout, took two quick wickets finishing his spell with 3-26.  Raj bowled tightly (1-10 off 5 overs), and AB with his first ball - a very definite early season loosener - saw Shero leap like a salmon at point to take a good catch. AB finished with 3-19 and Shero 2-15.  Ray finished the innings with Big Show, impressive throughout the afternoon with his new keeper gloves, taking a smart catch down the leg side.

An all round excellent performance which sees us top of the table after one game 🙂
