This week saw Taronga take on the high flying West Pymble, who were on the back of scoring 400 the previous week.
It was always going to be a tough assignment, especially with a few notables missing and a few making their season debut. On a hot day, on a full synthetic pitch, the first goal was to win the toss and bat. However, with some negotiation skills that made the Treaty of Versailles look like child’s play, Sharpy, who wasn’t even playing, persuaded West Pymble that it was in everyone’s interest that we batted first. Therefore no toss took place and our openers padded up. Sadly, that was one of the few highlights of the day.
Big Show and Rayan actually started ok and got through the first few overs looking relatively comfortable but the wheels were loosened as Big Show guided one of the face of his bat to first slip with the score on 11. The wheel nuts fell off with the score on 18 as we lost two in a row to slump to 3-18 off 7 overs. A mini fightback of sorts by Yogesh and Riordo (including Riordo hitting the first boundary of the innings in the 11th over) took the score to 34 before the wheels came completely off, rattled out of the ground and hurtled through Lane Cove smashing everything in their path as we went from 3-34 to 9-38!
An entertaining calypso style last wicket partnership of 34 between old man river (Raj) and ‘Funky’ Romo (just think a Colin Miller style reddish barnet) saw the score jump to 72 and avoid complete embarrassment.
It was never going to be enough but there was one moment of joy as Funky Romo took a smart caught and bowled to ruin one of their openers day. Unfortunately that’s where the gratification ended and West Pymble rattled off the runs one down inside 12 overs.
It meant a 4pm arrival at the Diddy though and interestingly the opposition arrived there too!
