Roseville 7/188 (McLeod 3/28; Toal 1/17; Frawley 1/36; Callaway 1/39; McCarthy 0/25; Manoharan 0/35) defeated OICC 9/157 (Frawley 47*; Callaway 39; McLeod 24; Toal 14, Mackenzie 14; Dyer 10; Forde 5; Coleman, McCarthy, Manoharan 0)

From having 7 players on Thursday to hopefully 12 players by Sunday, we were able to complete a team sheet. Alas, Roseville disallowed our ability to play Lord Bass, being 46 years of age, and we ended up playing with 10 all day and I was extremely proud of the way everyone really put in.

I lost the toss and we were put in to field. We started the day with 7 in the field for the first 8 overs (Paul Mullins offered fielders but I was OK without them – it is what it is). Slowly our late arrivals turned up and we fielded with 10. Huge thanks to Mark Geyer, Paul Manoharan (Lane Cove men) & our No 1, Guy Coleman, for making up the numbers.

Roseville got off to a reasonably good start (against 7 fielders) going at 5 an over and losing their first wicket at 58, with opener, Mulvaney, getting in the bank. Nos 7 & 9 also got in the bank with Frawley bowling a few too many loose ones. With what should have 200+, we did excellently to restrict them to 188 with our fielder number issues.

McLeod was certainly the pick of the bowlers with 3/28 from his 8, very well supported by the returning Toal, a typically miserly 1/17 of 6. Credit though must go to our openers, J Mac and Paul Manoharan, bowling with 7 then 8 fielders.

What I thought was definitely a chaseable score of 189, got off to a good start with Toal & McLeod taking 22 of the first 4 overs, Frawley and McLeod then took the score to 50 off the next 4 (2/50 off 8). The next 10 overs slowed us down to losing a further 2 wickets to be 4/84, needing 105 off the last 20. The next 9 overs saw us lose 4/29 to be 8/113, needing 76 of the last 11 with 1 wicket in hand.

Credit here to Roseville captain, Paul Mulvaney, who, in an act of sportsmanship, recalled the hobbled Frawley to the crease after being run out. Frawley had returned to the crease at the fall of the 8th wicket with a runner. After adding just 1 to his score, Frawley actually took a run, and instead of staying in the striker’s crease (as he is meant to) made his ground at the non-striker’s end. J Mac and Fingers Callaway had also made their ground. The Roseville players were screaming for the keeper to take the bails off to run Frawley out, which he did. Laws of the game – OUT.

So should have been all out 120. Roseville might have then started to regret this decision. Fingers Callaway played a superb innings, playing them to all parts of the ground (having his son Jake testing him in the nets has done wonders). Frawley and Callway got us to within striking distance, slowly bringing required rate per over down to a manageable 6. Alas – all out 153 with 6 overs remaining.

Roseville boys played in good spirit (even if they didn’t let us play Lord Bass as too young) and we enjoyed the amber ales afterwards.
