CLASSICS vs Mosman – Round 3 MATCH REPORT – 10/11/2024

Mosman 10/139 (Osborne 2/13; Manoharan 2/18; Toa 2/32’ Gillespie 2/40; Zell 1/9; Goradia 1/23) defeated OICC 87 (Mackenzie 22; Lanham 18; Goradia 15)

Mosman won the toss and elected to bat, and after 4 overs and some lusty swinging, it was looking like it could be a long day in the field, but on a deck that was proving to be very difficult to bat on a constant flow of wickets ensured we were able to restrict Mosman to 139, after being 5/84 at the 20 over mark.

Bomber Mackenzie was again superb behind the stumps, with his 3rd leg side stumping in 2 games off the opening bowlers, and no byes (Looks like his coaching at Lindfield Masters is paying off).

The openers did their job with Nirav and Paul having 3/for 41 off their 11. Then Zell and Scunge Gillespie combined to get 3 very important wickets, with Zell, particularly impressive with 8 straight to return 1/9, and Scunge 2/40.

Osborne and Toal finished off Mosman with a fine display of off spin bowling from Osborne, taking his best ever figures for OICC of 2/13 from 5, and Toal, as reliable as ever with 2/31 from his 7.

So, Mosman, after particular batsmen having their whinge about the deck and conditions and how great they were had set us 139, which we thought was certainly achievable.

Well, we got into trouble very early being 3/21 off 10, with the early departures of Forde, Glasson & Zell, with Bomber Mackenzie opening and providing the only resistance. Nirav got to the crease and continued his good form with the bat, and after putting on 25 with Bomber, eventually fell to a dubious LBW for 15. We were still in the hunt however, with Garling, Toal, Thomas & Lanham (all quality batsmen) still to come. With Thomas falling in the 24th over we were 7/57. Lanham and Bomber then put on 24 to give us some hope as Lanham opened his shoulders for his best score ever for OICC of 18, but it was not to be when Bomber fell for 22, and then losing our last 2 wickets for 6 more runs to be all out for 87 in the 34th over.

We certainly could have done with some reinforcements in the batting department, and our prayers and thoughts go out to Adrian Schwager, the ever reliable rock at the top of our order for both Masters and Classics. He is currently undergoing treatment for Cancer and we wish him all the best over the coming days/weeks & months.
